Final Exam study guide

1. Explain how to get to the server drives and your folder.
The server drives are on the desktop you click on the icon then go to your server T and look for your period then click on that and find your name.

2.Explain how we use blogger.com in this class
We use blogger to blog about photos or information for the whole world to see...kinda like a social network.

3. Explain the process of creating a pinhole camera
You get a oatmeal can and then cover it with black tape , covering everything to the point where there is no light showing inside, then you cut a hole put some tinfoil where you put the hole and then poke a small hole in the foil then close of the foil with the piece you cut of and there you got a pinhole camera. :)

4. Explain how the pinhole camera works and how the image is transferred to the paper inside
You put the special paper in the camera , with the lid closed, then open the tab for a short amount of seconds to let some light in for the paper to take in. After the short amount of seconds you are to proccess the paper in these special chemicals in a dark room. The paper turns the light into a picture.

5. Know how to define and explain the 10 rules of composition, these 10 rules will be a MAJOR portion of the final and you better know how to recognize these rules, explain these rules and show me you understand them:
5a.  Rule of thirds- Placing the subject in the corner of the photo and not in the center.

5b. Balancing Elements-Placing your main subject off-centre, as with the rule of thirds, creates a more interesting photo, but it can leave a void in the scene which can make it feel empty. You should balance the 'weight' of your subject by including another object of lesser importance to fill the space.

5c. Leading Lines- Lines that lead the eye to the subject of the photo.

5d. Symmetry and Patterns (repetition)- Using repeating patterns in a photo.

5e. Viewpoint- changing the viewpoint of something.

5f. Background/simplicity- Putting a subject on a photo with no background to where the eye wont get disturbed.

5g. Create depth- You can create depth in a photo by including objects in the foreground, middle ground and background.

5h. Framing- The world is full of objects which make perfect natural frames, such as trees, archways and holes. By placing these around the edge of the composition you help to isolate the main subject from the outside world.

5i. Cropping- Basically a big close up on a small object to give it emphasize.

5j. Mergers and avoiding them- Taking a photo where the subject does not seem where something shouldn't be growing like a tree growing from the back of someones head or something.

6. Explain how action and emotion impact a photograph
It moves the viewer and shows or tells a story of the subject.

7. Explain how a photo can "tell a story"
Showing emotions. Colors.

8. Explain what the word "multimedia" means and share some examples of how we have seen them in class (on the blog)
Multimedia- Having or offering the use of various communications or promotional media.TV. Photos. Music

9. Know how to correctly write a caption. I HIGHLY suggest you rewrite the rules on your blog and find at least 2 photos on the internet, post them on your blog and write correct captions for them. This will be a MAJOR portion of the exam as well.
Includes major information about the photo (who, what, where, when, why, how). and should include background information.

10. Explain how "strong action" verbs enhance a caption
Just like a comic it shows the type of action the character is partaking.

11. Explain how ethics come into play in regards to photojournalism and compare and contrast this with fashion photography. You really need to get the idea that changing photos to fit a need or to make something look like something else is VERY unacceptable in photojournalism.
Like in photojournalism changing something just a little is wrong in many ways because you are not showing the real things of the image. The same goes with fashion photography.

12. Explain the difference between a portrait and a self portrait.
A portrait is a picture of someone else. While a self portrait is a picture of yourself and how you describe yourself.

13. Explain what characteristics of a good portrait are.
The rules of photography. Having fun with it. Emotions. Colors.

14. Explain what the major differences are between newspaper and yearbook.
Newspaper is writing stories of modern day citizens or residents around. While yearbook is just stories of the past of accomplishments that students took.

Definitions you are responsible for (I highly recommend you post these on your blog with the definitions and make sure they are correct, many of the ones you posted on your blog previously were INCORRECT. All definitions need to relate directly to photojournalism. Example: many of you defined burning as "pain that feels hot as if it were on fire" , when the correct answer is "burning- increases the exposure to areas of the print that should be darker."):

  • Shutter Lag-
  • Is the delay between triggering the shutter and when the photograph is actually recorded.

  • Auto Focus-
  • Having the ability to focus automatically

  • Pixel-
  • The smallest element of an image that can be individually processed in a video display system.

  • Contrast Ratio-
  • Measure of a display system, defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest color (white) to that of the darkest color (black) that the system is capable of producing
  • --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Aperture-
  • Also called aperture stop . Optics . an opening, usually circular, that limits the quantity of light that can enter an optical instrument.

  • Shutter-
  • Photography . a mechanical device for opening and closing the aperture of a camera lens to expose film or the like.

  • Exposure-
  • To subject, as to the action of something

  • Depth of field-
  • The range of distances along the axis of an optical instrument, usually a camera lens, through which an object will produce a relatively distinct image.
  • Also called depth of focus.

  • F Stop-
  • The setting of an adjustable lens aperture, as indicated by an f number.

  • Focal length-
  • The distance between an object lens and its corresponding focal plane in a telescope.
  • Also called focal distance.
  •
  • 1. Contact sheet-photographic image produced from a film, usually a negative
  • 2. Agitation-Keeps a chemical moving
  • 3. Enlarger-To make something larger
  • 4. Developer-A solution used to make visible the image produced by allowing light to fall on the light-sensitive material
  • 5. Stop Bath-an acid bath used to stop the action of a developer
  • 6. Fixer-Used to remove residual  grain from films and prints when processing them

Ethics in fashion photography

1. List the changes that were made to the model's face in the computer. (Look carefully)
To her face, they made her eyes bigger and fuller, they got rid of her acne and gave her way better cheeks and made her skin look smooth and more healthy.

2. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like this in a photo? Why or why not?
To me, not in a photo for advertisement since the consumer wont necessarily look like this and its just false advertisement but for a little special occasion like a wedding or something is fine since you want to look as beautiful as you can.

3. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation?

Yes, for advertisement since it would be false results for the consumer like i explained in question #2.

4. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't?

Some changes that would be acceptable are acne clearing i think that is fine since theres lotions and creams that can help prevent it but changing your eye size or making your skin alot healthier and pure and glossy is not acceptable since its how you were born and you really cant change that look, its like looking a way that was not meant to be.

5. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism.Fashion photography is mostly physical looks, you in general. Photo journalism is more about your inner emotion and how you feel just by looking at a picture of the sky or a tree or anything particular.

6. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each?
Each type of photography shares a little emotion that effects the way people think about things, if people think make up can make you look beautiful than there gonna want it since some people like looking nice, that makes them feel better or some just like the nature of photography and it helps them see the good in life that distracts their mind from the bad in life.

Negatives Evaluation

1. From looking at your negatives, how many of your photos do you think turned out well?
All of them.

2. How many of your photos appear like they will not turn out well? Why do you think these photos did not turn out (Ex: Over/under exposed, not focused, bad composition)?
None of them.

3. Select the negative image that you think will turn out the best when it is printed. Why do you think this photo will turn out well?
#13 because you can tell the difference between the stuff that is gonna be dark and the stuff that is gonna be light.

4. What technical aspects of photography (focus, exposure, composition) do you think are present in your best negative? What evidence can you provide from the appearance of the negative to support your answer?

Photo Manipulation and ethics

1.)
A. Summarize the main points of the story in 1-4 sentences.
The main points about the story is that people are out there fooling around with these photo when it could really hurt what the picture actually means. Photo editing in my opinion is kinda dumb because it doesn't show the real world.

B. Explain why you think this type of photo editing is unethical or acceptable.
Photo editing in my opinion is kinda dumb because it doesn't show the real world. the only time that photoshop is acceptable is for fun like cartoons or something.

2.)
A. Post the manipulation that you think was the most unethical, and explain why you think it was unethical.

I think the most unethical picture that they have is the picture of  University of Wisconsin-Madison showing how they are a "Diverse" place. I think this because they really do this because they want some publicity.

B. Post the manipulation that you consider the least unethical, and explain why you think it is not as bad as others.
This one isn't very unethical because the editing really made it look cool. And no ones feeling will be hurt so that is a plus :)

Drug Cartels in Mexico

1.Write at least a paragraph about what you think about the topic.
I think this is a very sad article. Juarez is one of the most dangerous cities, but yet we are still worrying about other countries that "aren't" our neighbor. If America is about stopping communism or helping countries, why not help Mexico? If this escalates, this can easily be merged with America, and then America will have cartels in many states. It's very sad to see the "Protectors of the citizens" be so scared that they have decided to join the cartel such as this quote states
"You might be taking a photo of a policeman who is secretly working for a cartel," Antebi says. "That's something that makes murder scenes so ominous."

2.Tell me which photo was your favorite.
My favorite photo was at 1:06 with a woman holding a umbrella and her hand over her heart. The photographer used the rule of thirds composition in this picture, you can tell where the bad has happened just by looking at her head. This is my favorite picture because everything in it has a connection to what happened, like for example a woman holding a umbrella when it isnt raining kinda represents a funeral? This is how i see it and it represents death. Also the police van in the back has "preventivo" on it  means preventive but yet there is no preventing the violence in Juarez so its just something to think about.

Photo Shoot Reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get close, capture real moments, and capture action or emotion? Explain how you dealt with these challenges.
Making the people feel comfortable and not distract them from what they were doing. Capturing emotion is pretty tough because you have to get it at the right time so you have to be prepared at all times when shotting emotion, action, and real moments.  I remained quiet and tried not to get in anyones way.

2. What technical aspects of photography (focus, exposure, composition) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.
I thought about the exposure so I looked around and saw what kind of lighting the room had and also focus.

3. Explain how you attempted to use at least one of the advanced composition techniques you learned in class while shooting.
I tried the rule of thirds on a lot of my shots, When a student was working I used it by setting the student off to the side and showed more of the desk.

4. What would you do differently the next time you shoot to improve your photographs?
Be more comfortable with taking photos of students in action.

Processing Black and White photos

1.List the materials (equipment) necessary to process black and white film

  • A metal or plastic film tank
  • Three dark plastic containers to hold chemistry
  • Graduates (used to measure chemicals)
  • A darkroom timer
  • A can opener
  • A room that is totally light proof (not even the slightest sliver of light should be visible).
  • Developer (see other sidebar)
  • Glacial Acetic Acid (optional, for Stop Bath)
  • Fixer (Kodak Rapid Fixer with Hardener is highly recommended)
  • Hypo Eliminator
2.List the chemicals we might be using in the darkroom and where one would buy those chemicals
  • Developer, which causes the silver iodide of the film or paper emulsion to darken if it has been exposed to light.
  • Fixer, which removes the undeveloped silver iodide from the emulsion.
  • A chemical used to completely stop the development process is called stop bath, and is used between the developer stage and the fixer stage in both b&w film & paper processing.
  • You can buy these chemicals at any good camera store, if not you can also buy online.
3.) Summarize in one or two paragraphs the process from start to finish
You first load your film. Second, Mix your developer, stop bath, and fixer in the appropriate quantities and concentrations. After that, you check your times and temps. Remove the fill cap on your tank (not the lid), pour the developer quickly into the tank, tap the tank on a counter top to remove air bubbles, replace the fill cap, do 5-10 inversions, and start the timer. Do another 5-10 inversions every minute for the remainder of the development cycle. At :30, remove the fill cap and prepare to dump out the developer. At :15, start pouring the developer out (keep it if reusable, or dump it if one-shot). Then, you use your stop bath which only requires :30 S. Pour Fixer after the last step, and after your done with that you pour in water and wash it.
After you're done with all that, dump the remaining water from the tank and remove the film reel or reels.

4.) Post a photo of the equipment necessary to process film
5.) Post a photo of the chemicals necessary to process film

  • First, the video interests me because even with a disability the deaf can progress and be normal. In this case they can make a play without having to struggle with what you they hear or having to speak.
  • And Lastly the photo interest me because in such an early age the kids are introduced to live music. Which of course everyone should because music makes the world go round.

American Soldier slideshow and captions

A. What is the most powerful image from the slideshows? Why? The most powerful image from the slide show is where he is on his cell phone and he is holding a gun. Because he is in a completely different environment now so he doesn't know what to expect in this new evil world.

B. What sequence of photographs is the most powerful? Why? The most powerful sequence of photos are powerful of the Army. Because it shows the change of  how he is in the army now and how it's going to change him completely.

C.How do the images work together to tell a story? It is shown in a arranged order

A. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written? Most of the verbs are written in present tense.

B. How do the captions enhance the photographs? The captions enhance the photos by saying what the picture is showing, so not only do you have visual, but also verbal aid.

Chapter 3 :BASIC TRAINING picture #23.
Ian falls asleep in his room and is the victim of a prank pulled by fellow troop John.
Chapter 2: In The Army Picture #6.Ian Fisher closes his eyes and reminisces while he is getting his hair shaved his third day in the army.
Chapter 8: Coming home picture #26 Ian holds hands with his girlfriend and mother in a parking lot feeling good about seeing each other again.

A. How do these other features enhance the photographs? These features enhance the photography by telling us more of the stuff like behind the story meaning the picture, them speaking and telling us what's really going on.

B. In what ways are videos better than photographs? Provide an example from the Denver Post Web site.Videos are better than photographs by giving it the advantage for them to speak explain their selves  of whats happening instead of in a photo, you have to take a strong  guess on what's really going on in the photo.

C. In what ways are photos better than videos? Provide an example from the Denver Post Web site.Photos are better than videos by catching what people cant see, you get too look at and examine the photo for a very long time, and also you can be able to make up your own story and examine it. In Video's you cant do that, you have to watch listen and look which in some situations is kinda boring.

What the pros are doing - Repetition

Both the seats in the plane and the TV screens show repetition.

Marlboro Marine

  •  2. A. Luis Sinco not only took great photos but put audio in the slideshow giving it a meaning of feeling.... kinda..giving it that depressing feel when watching the show and also narrated making it seem like your right there with them.

  • B. Well like i said the audio gave the slideshow a feeling of depression , something the soldier felt after this stupid war.

  • 3. A. The most powerful image in the slide show was the photo of Miller looking out with feeling in his eyes. I like this photo because it showed the hopelessness in his eyes of him even surviving the war.

  • B. The best sequence of photos were the ones where he was on top of the parking meter and looking at people passing by, then he looks at the camera then looks down. I like these photos because it shows that he cant live a modern life without having to remember the harsh memories.

  • C.  Like i said before the audio enhances the slideshow by giving it some feeling to it. Kinda like setting the mood.

  • D. The images make it look like a picture book to where you can actually see what happened other than having to imaging all the stuff.

Contests Preview, Show and Tell

Raef Payne
First Place

Environmental Self Portrait
2004 Winter Conference
Arlington HS
Arlington, TX

This photo inspires me because of the lighting of the pic on the left side. I don't know what this person is doing put the lighting of the photo is phenomenal, kinda reminds me of  magic (Not that stupid fake crap, the real shiz). And i also like the outline of the guy and how it doesn't his face giving him that dark feel into him. The picture looks like the dark man is either making something with fire or using some kind of lighting and give it a magical feel. I wanna go eat a magician now :).

Great black and White photographers part 3 2/2

What really caught my eye were the weird looking goggles and how with only the rule of thirds it created emphasis on the face.
I See:
I see the workshop ahead as it is rocking back and forth because of the water. I prepare my goggles so i wont burn out my eyes with all the bright lights of construction raging around me. I ready myself as i will have a long day.

I Smell:
I smell something like iron a pretty disgusting smell as i walk through the construction. But as i get out of the boat i smell the fresh ocean air around me. Oh how the air smells...so crisp.

I Hear:
I hear my boss yelling at some new incomers the directions of the blueprints. It is hard for me to make out the words through all the hammering and work around the boat. Sooner or later I'm gonna go deaf.

I Taste:
I taste my sandwich in my mouth as i bite and chew my way through hunger. Finally during a hard days work i get to relax for a bit. But the just thought of me having to go back to work here in a couple minuets bums me out.

I Feel:
I feel the cold metal as i pound through for a check to help my homeless family. Soon i get to buy my family a nice house to where i would be look as a "godly" figure. But right now i just really wanna go see my family..so tired...the thought of my soft bed makes me more tired.

Great black and White photographers part 3 1/2

What caught my eye was how the man in this picture seemed like he was praying for his life kinda so he can live through and go back to his family.
I See:
I see bullets flaring past me. My men around me around me fall one after the other to the floor...bleeding.
I can not do anything for i am not a medic of any kind...knowing this my men pray with there last breathe for forgiveness.

I Smell:
I smell rotting flesh from a mile away. I inhale dirt in the air, not having a gas mask. The foul smell gives me a headache .

I Hear:
I hear my men's blood curdling screams as we are shoot down like sitting ducks in a pond. The sound of bullets ring throughout my head as i hear the noise repeatedly. I also hear my heart pound against my chest as the adreline pumps through me.

I Taste:
I taste the blood running down my cheek as i was scraped by a bullet. I am lucky to have lived through out the whole war but i cant forget all the deaths of my friends. I can almost remember the taste of not only smelling or inhaling the dirt but also the taste of it too.

I Feel:
I feel my friend's body go cold as I hold him in my arms. I feel that soon most of my men will pass away without even living there lives. Oh how cruel this world is...

Action or Emotion:
This photo shows the best emotion and action by showing the interest in the kids face as they discover new things.

Academics Preview Part One

The Story:
This one tells the best story because it shows a young adult showing little kids a story...basically like showing the little kids the necessities of life.

Hurricane Ike

The rule of thirds is represented in this pic by showing both the subject and the the destruction of her room.
I liked this photo a lot because it showed the depression on the girl's face when she saw her room.

In this photo, Framing is showed by showing the subjects (in this case the houses) in the foreground giving it more of that personality.
I liked this photo because it showed the before and after of the destruction....and there was a flaming house in it which is cool :)
